Natural Gas

Ground or natural gas is a naturally occurring mixture of hydrocarbons and other gases, mostly methane, found a gaseous state in natural underground deposits, dissolved in crude oil, or adjacent to crude oil beds.

It occurs when layers of decomposing plant and animal matter are exposed to intense heat and pressure below the Earth's surface over millions of years (usually at depths of 1 kilometer). The main components of most natural gases are methane and other hydrocarbons. Commercial natural gas generally contains 80-95% methane, therefore it is often also called methane (CH4).

Compressed natural gas CNG

After purification, natural gas is delivered as a raw material through gas pipelines operated under a 16 bar pressure, where from it is drawn for additional compression to a 200 to 220 bar pressure at production plants, resulting in compressed natural gas (CNG). The compressed natural gas can be then filled at the pumping station as a fuel directly into vehicles adapted for use of CNG, or it can be filled into mobile storages (trailers) for further distribution to customers. CNG is transported only by means of road transport, i.e. by trucks with specialized semi-trailers with a storage capacity of 5000 m3.

At delivery to the user, CNG is drawn from the trailer to the metering and regulating station (MRS), which serves for precise measurement and regulation of the gas pressure, i.e. for gas pressure reduction to the working pressure according to customer’s needs. The gas compressor station production capacity is 40 million m3.

CNG Advantages

1. Environmental

Use of natural gas as an energy source in industry and households has multiple advantages over all other energy sources (fuel oil, coal, heating oil, etc.). At burning of natural gas, no ash and soot residues causing air pollution are formed. There is no carbon monoxide emission, and also the amount of carbon dioxide emission is twice less compared to coal and fuel oil. Natural gas also does not contain sulfur, so there is no hydrogen sulfide emission into the air either. Compared to all other energy sources, natural gas is the most eco-friendly energy source for the human environment.

According to research, vehicles using natural gas as a fuel compared to those using diesel and gasoline also have a great advantage when it comes to air polluting gases emission. Maintenance and operating cost for natural gas vehicles are lower compared to liquid fuel vehicles, due to cleaner combustion and a more precise fuel injection system.

2. Economic

Advantages of natural gas use in industry are reflected in clean combustion and precise regulation, which cannot be achieved when using fossil fuels or fuel oil. Significant savings can be achieved by effective combustion control. Natural gas as a purely combusting energy source is a particularly important factor in the food and pharmaceutical industries. During combustion, natural gas achieves a very high level of utilization efficiency, ranging from 0.8 to 0.9. Costs of gas distribution, network losses and maintenance of gas distribution system are the lowest compared to other types of fuel. An additional advantage is the capability to receive a large amount of gas compared to the storage space size.

Significant savings can be made in industry when switching to CNG compared to existing energy sources. 29% light oil, 14% heavy oil, 24% liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). As an example, a factory that has a daily consumption of about 15-16 tons of LPG, by switching to CNG might save about Euro 1 million on an annual level!

3. Safety

Transportation and delivery of compressed natural gas to customers is made by road transport only, i.e. by trucks with specialized semi-trailers. Transportation systems with compressed natural gas cylinders (trailers) are constructed according to special requirements related to traffic safety, as well as to safety at management and handling of pressure vessels, flammable and explosive materials. Safety at filling and transportation of CNG is regulated by the international standard ADR, being the basis for safe filling, transportation and handling of hazardous substances in all EU countries and the countries of our region.

Natural gas is lighter than air, so in case of any possible leakage, it rises up and disperses into the air, thus eliminating the risk of emergency situations. In contrary, LPG is heavier than air, and in case of leakage it will fall to the ground.

In terms of safety, the advantage of CNG over diesel and gasoline is reflected in the fact that it has a higher flash point, which means that it is less ignitable.

Our offer

Consultancy

Based on customer needs, we provide the necessary technical assistance and expertise. And for customers using fuel oil, heating oil or liquefied petroleum gas as an energy source, we recommend switching to CNG, in order to achieve the mentioned above benefits in quality, efficiency, environmental and economic aspects of the operating process. Switching to CNG as an energy source can be interesting for all industry branches, and due to the specifics of their manufacturing process, here we single out the food and textile industries, and the like.

Delivery at customer location

Production capacity of the gas compressor station at Oil Refinery Brod is 40 million m3 per year. We can perform delivery to any location in Bosnia and Herzegovina, whereat the transportation is made by specialized vehicles (trailers) only, with a carrying capacity of 5000 m3.

КPG Compressor & Filling Station

Vehicles using CNG as propellant can be refueled directly at the Oil Refinery Brod filling station. The filling equipment is capable of refueling two vehicles (using CNG as propellant) simultaneously,   and loading two trailers at the same time. The NESTRO Group will continue to develop such economic activity in the coming period, in order to offer their customers the fuel of the future in as many locations as possible.
